Cable insulation damage can be divided into 3 groups:
- Short circuit (short circuit) to the ground. Such damage is best looked for at a low frequency.
- Damage to a cable with a transient resistance of several kOhms. With damages of the order of 1 kOhm and above, the leakage current is faintly discernible against the background of the current through the cable's capacitance to the ground. Special methods (as well as the contact method) are used to find such leaks. It should be remembered that the sensitivity of special methods increases at the end of the cable farthest from the generator.
- Damage to cables with a transient resistance of 10 kOhm or higher. Such damages are reliably detected only by the contact method.
